Timeless Fun (pictured above)

Magician Lake / Dowagiac, Mich.

“We were getting ready to sell our cottage, so my dad and I took our boat down to the channel at Magician Lake so I could take some pictures. These kids were swinging on a rope swing, so we stopped to talk to them. They showed us their pet baby ducks and a few tricks jumping off the swing. Just after we said goodbye and took off, I turned around to get one more shot. I’m so glad I did! The black-and-white film makes this shot look so timeless, as if it were taken many years ago, or just yesterday.”

Safe Harbor(pictured above)

Cana Island Lighthouse / Door County, Wis.

“I’ve always had a passion for lighthouses, and the Cana Island Lighthouse is my favorite one on the peninsula – a beautiful place to go and relax. Because the water was low, I was able to walk well out onto the rocky/sandy shoreline to get this angle. I like the mood of relaxation and the security of the sailboat, which has the lighthouse to guide its way. I shot this early in the morning, when the light allows for shadow-lines and side-light. It left a soft, diffused light, but still texture in the sailboat and lighthouse.”

Frosty Vintage(pictured above)

Hills Road / Baroda, Mich.

“An ice storm had come through that afternoon, so I drove into the vineyard area in southwest Michigan. It was about four or five in the afternoon and was just getting dark. The thing that caught my eye was the rows of the grapes, covered in frost from the storm. It’s a pretty dramatic kind of picture. The way the hills roll to the back of the image highlights the geometry found in nature.”

Boat of Character(pictured above)

The Holland Channel Holland, Mich.

“I was walking on the sand near Big Red, taking pictures of what the beach spit out. There were some boats pulled up into the grasses, and I just liked the lines and texture in this one. It feels like there’s a story behind it. The boat has three different colors, so that means people have painted it three different times. I wonder who has owned this boat, where it’s gone and where it’s traveled.”

All Smiles(pictured above)

Millennium Park / Chicago

“We had been at the park for two hours, wandering around. Will and Madeline were complaining that their feet were tired. The kids saw the foot bath, immediately took off their shoes, and plopped their feet in. I happened to be standing behind them, and they looked up and smiled. The spontaneous, spur of the moment things make life special. This photo brings back a flood of happy emotions about capturing the little things in life. Kids grow up so fast.”

Winter Squall(pictured above)

Ludington North Light / Ludington, Mich.

“I’m near the water’s edge. This actually means I was on the ice flows – mounds of snow and ice piled up on the shore by previous storms. I took this shot during the biggest blizzard of that winter. Just before sunset, the sun broke below the clouds and created the magic light for the picture, back-lighting the waves. Just for a couple of minutes the light was great – poetically perfect and balanced. I just loved the entire energy and motion of the picture and the artistry of the wave. The lighthouse is beautifully wrapped in the wave. I try to show Lake Michigan at its most beautiful and powerful, and this image does both at the same time.”
